Intimidating.

That’s the word my brother used to describe the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR as he viewed this street racer from the rearview mirror of his mere mortal Honda CR-V during a recent family trip to Emerald Downs.

And I wasn’t even tailgating or otherwise showing off, just minding my own business, trucking down I-405 on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

The 2008 Lancer Evolution looks the part of the street-wise sports machine with its shark-nosed front end inspired by jet fighter air intakes, aggressively sloping hood with integral air scoop and engine heat outlets, boxed fenders, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Add a “Wicked White” paint job and other cars are getting out of the way.

And Evo has the goods to back up its bad boy looks.

Powered by an all-new, 291-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged and intercooled engine coupled with a six-speed twin clutch and Super All-Wheel Control that goes beyond the capabilities of most all-wheel drive systems, the Lancer Evo distinguishes itself as a world-class performance model.

My tester’s EPA rating is 17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway.

The revised turbocharger yields up to 20 percent quicker response at lower engine speeds versus the 2006 engine’s turbocharger.

With exciting performance assured, Mitsubishi equipped the Lancer Evolution to be a markedly better car for everyday driving and to attract a broadening customer base.

Each model offers one major option package: The Sight, Sound and Spoiler Package for the GSR combines the HID headlights, large rear spoiler and the Rockford-Fosgate 650-watt premium sound system with 10-inch subwoofer, plus a six-disc in-dash CD changer with MP3 capability, and Sirius satellite radio with a six-month service subscription.

Let’s just say the sound system is literally mind-blowing.

Another cool feature is FAST Key. This system allows the driver to unlock the vehicle simply by having the remote in a pocket or purse and grasping the handle on either of the front doors or the trunk. No fuss, no muss.

The four-door sedan seats four adults comfortably and includes a functional trunk. New Recaro seats ensure support during sporty driving and integrate new side airbags. While providing an even deeper bass exhaust note than the previous model, the 2008 Lancer Evolution succeeds in reducing unwanted road noise and vibrations.

As the previous version did, the 2008 model offers three driver-selectable traction modes: Tarmac, Gravel and Snow to make this car a true performer in less than favorable weather conditions.

The 2008 Lancer’s safety package is one of the most comprehensive in the segment and includes an advanced dual front airbag supplemental restraint system with occupant sensors, standard front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags, plus a driver’s knee airbag.

The standard anti-lock braking system integrates electronic brake-force distribution, and all Lancer models have a tire pressure monitoring system.

Mitsubishi also provides a unibody design body structure that disperses energy loads during side and rear crashes, enhancing occupant protection and also helping to protect the fuel system during a rear impact.
