Power play advantage keys Tips' win

Everett scores three times on special teams and shuts out Medicine Hat's power play to win 4-1 Tuesday night.

MEDICINE HAT, Alberta -- The Medicine Hat Tigers may have been the better team five-on-five Tuesday night. But the Everett Silvertips were better on special teams, and that proved decisive.

Everett scored three times on the power play and shut out Medicine Hat's power play in a 4-1 Silvertips' victory.

Dane Crowley, Zach Hamill and Kyle Beach scored with the advantage for Everett (11-7-0-0), which won its third straight. Meanwhile the Tips held Medicine Hat's power play to 0-for-8.

Zack Dailey added a late four-on-four goal for Everett, Jonathan Harty notched three assists and Leland Irving made 25 saves in goal for the Tips.

Tyler Ennis scored and Tomas Vosvrda made 20 saves for the defending WHL-champion Tigers (12-6-2-0), who lost their third straight.

The Tips played from behind early as Medicine Hat struck just 1 minute, 43 seconds into the game. Matthew Konan took a wrist shot from the left point and Ennis reached out his stick in front and deflected the puck past Irving to give the Tigers the lead.

But despite some quality chances throughout, that was all Medicine Hat could manage, and the Tips' power play took control from there.

At 14:24 of the first, Crowley blasted a one-timer from the point through traffic and into the net, tying it at 1-1.

Then at 18:11 of the second period the Tips took the lead. Shane Harper received the puck in the right slot and waited before popping a pass over the sticks in the crease for Hamill to bang in and make 2-1.

Everett then received a little fortune to secure the game at 9:11 of the third period. Medicine Hat got caught in a line change, allowing the Tips to break into the zone three-on-zero. Beach took the shot himself and found the top corner to make it 3-1.

The Tips completed the scoring with 31.7 seconds remaining, Dailey hacking in a rebound off a Lukas Vartovnik shot.

Everett played without second-leading scorer Dan Gendur, who sat out with a shoulder injury suffered in Sunday's 4-2 victory over Calgary. Gendur is listed as day to day.

The Tips lost defenseman Taylor Ellington in the first period when he had to be helped off the ice after being checked from behind by Medicine Hat's Scott Wasden. Ellington did not return because of what was described as a lower-body injury.
