Mariners today

Today in camp

Mariners vs. Oakland A’s, 12:05 p.m. (PST) at Phoenix on KOMO radio (1000 AM).
Right-hander Miguel Batista will start for the Mariners, followed to the mound by right-hander R.A. Dickey, left-hander Ryan Rowland-smith, right-hander Roy Corcoran and left-hander Eric O’Flaherty. Right-hander Joe Blanton will start for the A’s.

Monday in camp

Jarrod Washburn, Seattle’s No. 4 starter, allowed the Chicago Cubs four hits in three scoreless innings but the North Siders went on for a 6-5 victory in Peoria, Ariz.

Washburn struck out one, liked the results of his new grip on his changeup and declared he wants to pitch longer in games.

“The season’s in about a week, right?” he joked.

Jon Lieber, a candidate for the end of Chicago’s rotation, allowed three hits in two runs in two innings. His ‘07 was cut short by surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his right foot. Monday, he got hit on the bottom of his left foot on an infield single by Jeremy Reed in the second inning. A trainer came out to check on him, but Lieber said he was fine.

On the trainer’s table

-- Designated hitter Jose Vidro has a sore right elbow and may miss a few days. Manager John McLaren said it’s not serious.

-- Catcher Brant Ust suffered another bout of back spasms and will be out 3-5 days. He also missed a few days early in camp because of back spasms.

-- Pitcher Anderson Garcia had his right arm examined Monday by team physician Dr. Edward Khalfayan after he threw less than a dozen pitches in the bullpen Sunday before stopping because of pain. Garcia has been down all camp because of tendinitis in his right biceps.

Weather

After two days of sunny but breezy weather that brought out jackets and sweatshirts, it’ll be 76 and pleasant today.

They said it

“Anything less than the playoffs would be a disappointment for me, for sure. I think the team feels the same way. We feel like we can be an elite ballclub and that’s our mindset”

Mariners manager John McLaren

They did it

Monday’s “American Idol” segment of the morning team meeting featured T.J. Nakagawa, an intern with the Mariners’ training staff and a graduate student at the University of Arkansas, by way of Mie, Japan.

Nakagawa introduced himself to the team, then performed what all good Arkansas Razorbacks fans do so well: the famed “Woooo Pig Sooey!” cheer.
