Thursday in camp
n Behind in the count to Milwaukee's Ryan Braun in the second inning, Seattle's Felix Hernandez threw Braun a mid-90s fastball. The pitcher never bothered turning to watch the flight of the ball during the Mariners' 5-2 victory in Phoenix.
"For what?" Hernandez said. "I saw that ball coming off the bat. I knew where it was going."
Hernandez, who pitched four innings and struck out five, also allowed a solo home run to Rickie Weeks in the third inning.
"Those were bullets," said Hernandez, who gave up 20 homers in 30 starts last season. "I got behind on fastball counts and just challenged them. They got them."
n Third baseman Adrian Beltre injured his left thumb while fielding a grounder in Thursday's game. The Mariners don't believe it's serious but should know more about his status today.
n Outfielder Jeremy Reed suffered a bruised right knee during Wednesday's game and his status is day-to-day.
n The MRI on pitcher Anderson Garcia's right arm will be reviewed today by team medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayan. Garcia has suffered from biceps tendinitis since the first day he threw after the M's claimed him off waivers from the Phillies.
n Miguel Batista, who pitched despite discomfort in his left side Tuesday, is scheduled to throw in the bullpen today and make his next start Sunday.
n Designated hitter Jose Vidro will test his hyperextended right elbow by hitting off a tee today and, if that goes well, should be ready to play Saturday.
n Catcher Brant Ust will be out up to four days because of back spasms.
Weather
n Sunny and 74 today for another meeting of the Mariners, Cubs and Lou Piniella.

n Third baseman Adrian Beltre, who resists taking a day off during the regular season, isn't an easy guy to keep out of the lineup in spring training, either. He returned Wednesday night from three days in Mexico because of a death in his wife's family and, even though manager John McLaren planned to give him Thursday off, Beltre was in the lineup against the Brewers.
