Trail Blazers' Roy out
Associated Press
Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy will miss tonight's game at Golden State and it's likely he'll be out longer because of a groin injury.
Roy, an All-Star reserve, was injured in Tuesday night's 102-82 victory over the Washington Wizards.
"I'm not saying there is a guarantee I will be able to come back and play, but if I can, that's my goal," Roy told The Oregonian newspaper in a story posted on its Web site. "Even if it's the last two games, I want to give it a try and finish the season."
Roy, who told the newspaper he believes he'll be out two weeks, averages a team-high 19.3 points and 5.8 assists per game.
The Trail Blazers have 10 games left, and need four more victories to finish with a winning record.
HAWKS: X-rays of the left thumb of Atlanta guard Mike Bibby showed no damage after he left the Hawks' 115-96 win over Milwaukee on Wednesday night.
The nine-year veteran was driving to the basket in the third quarter when a Milwaukee defender swiped at the ball and hit his thumb.
After missing a 3-point attempt on the first possession of the fourth, Bibby walked to the locker room and didn't return to the bench. He scored 16 points and had three assists.
Bibby missed Sacramento's first 36 games this season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in the thumb.
PACERS: Indiana forward Troy Murphy missed the Pacers' game with New Jersey Wednesday night because of strep throat. Murphy was seen by doctors on Wednesday. He remained at the hotel when the team left for the Izod Center.
WARRIORS: Chris Webber announced his retirement after 15 NBA seasons on Wednesday, cutting short his comeback attempt with the Golden State Warriors and his rapprochement with coach Don Nelson.
"It definitely didn't work out the way that I planned," Webber said. "Life is what happens while you're making plans. I'm happy. I'm happy I got a chance to come back here and be reunited with Coach."
Webber played nine games with the Warriors before being sidelined by a bum left knee that's hampered him in recent years. He has not played since March 2 and had not been around the team of late.
Slowed by the knee injuries, Webber struggled to keep up with the fast-pace Warriors and averaged just 3.9 points per game.
Webber and the Warriors hoped that a return to the spot at which he started his NBA career would help both parties. Webber's first stint with the team ended after one season with a feud with Nelson, a public trade demand and finally a deal to Washington.
Nelson and Webber made up this time around and spoke well of each other.
JORDAN: The Illinois Supreme Court said Wednesday it would not hear an appeal in the long-running legal dispute between retired Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan and an Indianapolis woman.
Jordan and Karla Knafel went to court in 2002 after she claimed he agreed in 1991 to pay her $5 million when he retired from professional basketball to keep an affair secret. DNA tests later showed her child wasn't Jordan's.
