Studs romp, eliminate Merchants

 TACOMA -- The Everett Merchants had two chances Sunday to beat the Seattle Studs and earn a trip to the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan., but the Merchants came out flat, dropping the final two games of the best-of-three series, 20-1 and 5-1.

After three scoreless innings in the first game of the doubleheader, the Studs burst out with six runs in the fourth, then piled on five more in the sixth and compiled what turned out to be an insurmountable 11-0 lead. In the second game, the Studs scored three runs in the third and two in the sixth. The Studs had a total of 35 hits for the day.

The two Merchant runs scored were both solo home runs by Gavin Hienemann (fourth of the year) and Beau Blacken (5th), respectively.
