Forest Service officer's slaying suspect is shot to death

SHELTON -- Police shot and killed a man Saturday night that they say was a suspect in the shooting death of a female U.S. Forest Service officer in Sequim earlier in the day.

The Clallam County Sheriff's Department confirmed that Shawn Roe, 36, of Sequim was killed by police as he left a convenience store near the Seven Cedars Casino sometime after 9 p.m.

Authorities said Roe died when he allegedly pulled a gun on police and police opened fire.

Roe's killing happened as the Washington State Patrol and other police agencies were investigating the shooting death of officer Kristine Fairbanks, 51, of Forks.

Authorities said Fairbanks was shot after reporting a suspicious van at the Dungeness Forks campground east of Sequim about 2:40 p.m.

Washington State Patrol troopers said Fairbanks, a K-9 officer, was working on Forest Road 2880 when she radioed State Patrol dispatchers to ask for information on the vehicle.

When a dispatcher radioed back, there was no response, said State Patrol spokeswoman Krista Hedstrom. Officers went to the scene and found Fairbanks dead of a gunshot wound. Her police dog was in her vehicle.
