Island County Sheriff Mark Brown hosts a community outreach meeting for residents of central and north Whidbey Island on Tuesday.
Meet at 7 p.m. at the at the Heller Road Fire Station, 2720 Heller Road in Oak Harbor.
Brown will discuss the future of the Island County Sheriff's Office. Specifically he will be talking about manpower, crime statistics, 911 calls and budget requests for the coming year.
UW celebrates homecoming
The University of Washington's Homecoming celebration begins Oct. 12 with the 23rd annual Dawg Dash charity race.
On Oct. 17 the UW Alumni Association hosts the Homecoming Rally in Red Square.
The Homecoming game is at 4 p.m. Oct. 18 against Oregon State University.
Horse rescue seeks donations
The Equine Rescue Association, which takes in and cares for orphaned horses, is suffering from the economic downturn, members say.
About 25 volunteers care for approximately 30 horses on land provided by the Marysville School District at 2415 116th St. NE on the Tulalip Indian Reservation. Many of the horses have been abused, neglected or abandoned.
The group's expenses are about $3,500 per month but have been climbing because of the rising cost of feed and veterinary services. The group survives on lesson fees and donations, which have fallen off, according to volunteers.

'Heroes' author to speak in Sultan
Author Jim MacDicken speaks Tuesday at the Sultan Community Center.
MacDicken is a retired Sultan High School teacher and a former football coach.
At 7 p.m. Tuesday, he will tell stories from his new book, "Ordinary Heroes," and will do a book signing afterward at 319 Main St. in Sultan.
