Ball players go to Cal Ripken baseball camp
A team of 16 youth baseball players from various Snohomish County Boys & Girls Clubs recently won the honor to participate in an all-expenses-paid trip to the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation Summer Youth Experience baseball camp in Baltimore. They were among 191 children who participated in the program. The honor was a reward for boys who participated in the Ripken sponsored Healthy Choices, Healthy Children Program.
The boys who participated in the camp, listed by their club, were:
Arlington club: Aaron Carlson, Jordan Nielson, Raymond Stiegler and Tyler Mueller.
Cascade club: Travis Patrick, Dawson Cook, Kostandinos Cooper and Luke Swatosh.
Everett club: Connor Bretz, Lucas Burklund-Gregory, Alexander Clouse, Andrew Crosby, Michael Carter, Cole Mardesich, Mitch Erickson and Jeffrey Atwood.
Adults who traveled with the kids were: Kevin Coghill, Arlington club athletic director, David Winters, Everett club athletic director, Mark Carter, Everett Police Department and Boys & Girls Club coach and Ed Gay, Boys & Girls Club administration.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County has 13 clubs and 18 extension sites throughout Snohomish County serving nearly 18,000 kids.
Cancer volunteers return from summit
The Cancer Resource Center volunteer team recently returned from the American Cancer Society Summit in Reno, Nev., where the team participated in educational sessions. Jerri Wood, ACS staff partner; Katherine Hale, volunteer training coordinator; Karen Hart Cordell, CRC chairwoman; Tracy Anderson, CRC operations chairwoman, Les Hoge, volunteer outreach and Delores Hoge, management chairwoman, attended the summit.
Phone club donates $10,000 to academy
The Verizon Norwesco Pioneers Club recently contributed $10,000 to update the computer lab and network for the Greater Trinity Christian Learning Academy's Operation Latchkey program. The club is made up of current and retired Verizon employees.
Bruce Nurse, Greater Trinity Christian Learning Academy board president and the Rev. Paul Stoot Sr., executive director accepted the donation from Tuesdie Shaffer, Verizon Norwesco Pioneer Club president and Morrie Sachsenmaier, the club's Western U.S. president.
Greater Trinity Christian Learning in Everett serves about 60 pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students with classes and in its afternoon Operation Latchkey program.
Kiwanis group gives dictionaries to kids
The Silver Lake Kiwanis Group recently raised money to provide 2,000 dictionaries to third-graders in public and private schools in the Everett School District. This is the third year the group has donated dictionaries to schools.
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers. In addition to the dictionary project, the Kiwanis group also sponsors various clubs such as the Kiwanis Key Club for high school kids, Kiwanis Builders Club for middle school kids and K-Kids for elementary school-aged children.
Community group names raffle winners
The Quilceda Community Services recently named Robin Swain of Arlington and Lindsey Smith of Stanwood winners of its raffle. Swain and Smith received spa treatments, dinners and stays at the Tulalip Resort Hotel.
Funds generated by the raffle are earmarked for a newly developed recreation and activity center for adults with developmental disabilities.
Christmas group wins presidential honor
Operation Marysville Community Christmas recently received the President's Volunteer Service Award from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. Operation Marysville Community Christmas is made up of volunteers who serve the Marysville Community Food Bank.
The group is celebrating its 23rd year distributing holiday food baskets and toys to local families in need at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
25 musicians join Youth Symphony
The Everett Youth Symphony Orchestras recently named 25 Everett youths, selected by audition, to participate in the 2008-09 concert season. Samady Del Angel, Zachary Heyman, Brian Langingi, Han Lee and Nikki Traversie, on violin were selected for Prelude Strings. Daniel Kim, violin; Sol Lee, violin; Catherine Marty, violin; Margo Pin, viola and Sarah Sorenson, violin were selected for Intermezzo Strings. Jeremy Blas, baritone; Nick Bledsoe, bass trombone; Zoe Duvall, violin; Katy Pace, viola; Steven Parks, oboe and Madelyn Rangel, flute were chosen for Junior Symphony. Emily Cooper, percussion; Elizabeth Hile, flute; Brian Kavanaugh, trumpet; Daniel Kavanaugh, French horn; Stephanie Lebens, trombone; Erin Parks, flute; Estelle Pin, cello; James Quillin, clarinet and Michael Skerlong, French horn were selected for Youth Symphony.
The Everett Youth Symphony Orchestras is led by Tam Osborne, artistic director.
Three dancers win in couples competitions
Three student dancers from Oly's New Stars DanceSport USA in Everett recently won awards in couples dance competitions. The three dancers danced with Sergey Nekrawov, a professional dancer from Everett.
Nina Nikolova, from Marysville won first place in the Pro-Am Open International Latin Scholarship and in the World Pro-Am Latin DanceSport Series at the California Open 2008.
Eri Minagawa, from Everett, won second place in the Dance Sport Series Open Scholarship Latin at the Seattle Star Ball 2008.
Dascha Jayne Wright, 5, from Everett, won Top Solo Award at the Seattle Star Ball 2008 and at the Emerald Ball 2008, Los Angeles.
Artists honored in Mountlake Terrace
Nearly 200 artists and patrons recently attended the 30th annual Arts of the Terrace reception and regional juried art show in Mountlake Terrace.
This was the first year art could be submitted in a digital format. Awards were given for works selected from among the 250 juried into the show. After the awards ceremony, patrons and artists enjoyed food and music by a Jazz I Combo from Edmonds-Woodway High School.
Janis Graves received the Best of Show honor for a pastel called "Weavers Dream." Sam Scott received the City Purchase Award for a porcelain plate entitled "The Ripple" and Andrew Morrison received the Commissioner's Choice Award for his portrait "Joel."
