Prep football: Curtis beats Mariner 14-7 on kickoff return

 UNIVERSITY PLACE -- Curtis went into its game against Mariner Friday night with a score early and score often attitude. After averaging 58.3 points per contest in its last six ballgames, the Vikings knew how to find the end zone.

But with a wet field and tougher competition in the playoffs, defense became the name of the game for both teams. With its offense running stagnant, the Vikings used some big plays on defense and special teams to hold on for a 14-7 victory in a 4A quad-district playoff game Friday at Curtis High School.

"We have faith that our defense can do it," said sophomore Rahmel Dockery. "Everybody on the defense are all leaders and stay strong and push each other."

The Vikings (9-1) blew out Emerald Ridge 73-0 last week, but this time around their offense didn't score a point. It took an interception and kickoff return for touchdowns to claim the victory against the Marauders.

"It's no doubt we won that game with our defense and special teams," said Curtis coach Clay Angle. "Our defense has been great all year."

Neither offense was able to get anything started with real consistency in the first half and turnovers were a big reason why. The Vikings lost the ball a total of four times, including two fumbles, while Mariner turned it over three times as the two teams went into the locker room deadlocked at 7-7.

Curtis had only turned the ball over a total of seven times in the regular season.

"You have to give most of the credit to their defense," Angle said about Mariner.

With neither team yet to put a mark on the scoreboard in the second quarter, safety Landon Carr stepped in front of a pass from Mariner quarterback A.J. VanWieringen, grabbed the ball and raced 42 yards down the sideline to put the Vikings on top 7-0 after the extra point.

Mariner, however, answered shortly after that. On the first play of the next drive, Marauder running back Adrien Black took a handoff 62 yards down the right sideline, before being thrown out of bounds by Carr. Running back Jaren Saga plowed through the line for 7 yards and a score three plays later to tie the score.

"I knew my team would pull through and get the victory because we stayed strong," Dockery said. "But we have to give credit to the other team because they played hard."

At the start of the second half, Dockery took the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. It would end up as the game winning score as the Viking defense tightened up on the Mariner running game to clinch the win.

"He's a sophomore who started slowly this year and he's pretty dangerous with the ball in his hands," Angle said of Dockery who had already returned a kick for a score going into the game.

Cascade 21, Stanwood 15: At Stanwood, Aaron Frye of Cascade rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries in the non-league victory over Stanwood. Brad Gee rushed for two touchdowns and had 151 yards on 35 carries for Stanwood.

Oak Harbor 14, Kamiak 7: At Oak Harbor, James Jordan was 5-for-12 for 184 passing yards. He threw for one touchdown and rushed for another. Derrick Clarit had two catches for 113 yards and a touchdown for Oak Harbor. Kamiak totaled 195 offensive yards. The Knights' lone score came on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Sam Ruppel to Josh Glenn. Kamiak held the Wildcats to just 7 rushing yards.

Alrington 26, Shorecrest 0: At Arlington, Tyler Frauenholtz had an 80-yard kickoff return to start the second half of the non-league game, igniting a 20-point surge by Arlington. The Eagles held Shorecrest to 66 total yards, allowing zero passing yards and just five first downs. Arlington also had a blocked punt and two fumble recoveries. Andy Smith was 5-for-11 for 81 passing yards and two touchdowns for Arlington, which improved to 6-4 overall. Shorecrest is 4-6.

Mountlake Terrace 45, Monroe 25: At Monroe, Mountlake Terrace quarterback Brandyn Eckhart rushed for 185 yards and had four touchdowns to lead the Hawks to the non-league victory. Mountlake Terrace rushed for a total of 385 yards, including 155 by Casey Ellersick. Mikael Rasmussen added three interceptions for the Hawks. Bryan Sonneveldt led Monroe by completing 13 of 30 passes for 232 yards and Connor Shelford had five catches for 107 yards, including two touchdowns.

2A District 1 prelims: At Anacortes, Amy Renslo swam state qualifying times in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly. Renslo was third in the 200 frree and first in the butterfly followed by teammate Katie Main, who swam a state qualifying time in that event as well as in the 500 freestyle.
