The team behind this special report:

Reporter Sharon Salyer was selected to participate in a fellowship program offered through The University of Southern California's Annenberg School of Journalism focusing on the nation's growing ethnic diversity and health policies. Salyer, who reports on health and social issues, has worked at The Herald since 1985. She is a member of the board of the Western Washington Society of Professional Journalists and is a member of the Association of Health Care Journalists.

Reporter Alejandro Domínguez writes for the Spanish-language newspaper La Raza del Noroeste, a weekly newspaper that covers community news for the Hispanic community in the Puget Sound area. In September, he was granted American citizenship.

Photographer Dan Bates has been at The Herald since 1984. In nearly 30 years of work, he has won numerous awards from the National Press Photographers Association for his news, features and sports photography.

Copy editing of the Spanish-language version of the series by Aileen Charleston, who was born in Mexico City. Her family moved to McAllen, Tex., when she was 12. She graduated in 2006 from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree in Latin American Studies and French and a minor in anthropology. Earlier this year, she worked as an intern at the Federal Way Mirror before being hired at La Raza.
