Prep boys roundup: Edmonds-Woodway wins battle of unbeatens

 EDMONDS -- Edmonds-Woodway handed Kamiak its first loss of the season in front of a wild and loud audience at Edmonds-Woodway High School 38-23, using a variety of pins and decisions that made the crowd go crazy, according to E-W statistician Heather Rahla.

"It was loud, I don't think I have ever seen this gym packed like it was last night ever before," said Rahla, who has been the Edmonds-Woodway team statistician for more than 15 years. "This was the battle of an unbeaten."

Edmonds-Woodway improved its record to 2-0 in the Wesco South and 4-1 overall. Kamiak dropped to 1-1 in conference, and 3-2 overall.

E-W won six of the first seven matches to jump out to an early advantage, but Kamiak won three of the next four to close in on the Warriors.

In the 135-pound bout, E-W's Ryan Deweese defeated Bryton Reim 16-8. At the end of the first period, Deweese led 4-2, but Reim tied the score at 4-4 at the end of second. A flurry of points occurred in the third period between the two, until Deweese finally won 16-8.

In the final match of the night, the Warriors' Ryan McAllister won by decision over Dillon Starkenburg, 14-10 in a match that included intense grappling, ground attacks, and escaping maneuvers.

"That was like playing cat and mouse, take down escape, takedown, escape," Rahla said.

Meadowdale was 12-for-15 from the free-throw line, including six of seven in fourth quarter. the Mavericks' Roger O'Neill led all scorers with 26 points.
