Two members of the Everett Community College softball team have been named to the 2009 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Northern Region first team.
Freshman second baseman Ally Pappas and sophomore outfielder/designated hitter Nena Slocum each earned first-team honors. Pappas is a graduate of Everett High School. Slocum attended Jackson High.
Six of their teammates were named to the second team. The group included first baseman Liz Jusko, shortstop Kristina Sherriff, third baseman Annie Collins, outfielder Megan Stepfro, pitcher Joleen Monfiletto and outfielder Alyse Wynar. All six are freshmen.
The Trojans (21-23 overall) finished fourth in the North Region this season with a 16-8 league record. They advanced to the NWAACC tournament.
Garza wins Jr. Olympics event
Alyssa Garza of Marysville placed first in the Ball event for the Level 5 Junior B Division at the recent rhythmic gymnastics Junior Olympic Compulsory Championships in Norfolk, Va.
Garza, a 13-year-old eighth grader at Totem Middle School, also placed second in the Floor, Hoop, Rope and All-Around competitions.
Also competing at the national event was Kaitlyn Bostrom, a 10-year-old fourth grader at Mountain Way Elementary School in Granite Falls. Both girls are members of the Pursuit of Perfection Gymnastics Academy in Marysville.
James second at World Cup
Ursula Grobler James of Lake Stevens competed last month in a World Cup rowing event in Banyoles, Spain, and placed second in the lightweight women's double sculls with teammate Teresa Mas de Xaxars of Spain.
The pair finished second to the German team over the 2,000-meter course, and ahead of teams from Canada, Great Britain, Poland and Greece.
The 29-year-old James is a native of South Africa, but came to the United States in 2004. She married David James of Lake Stevens in 2006. She has been training in Spain in recent months, and because of issues related to her citizenship -- the earliest she could become a U.S. citizen is perhaps next year -- she was allowed to compete for Spain in last month's World Cup event.

Lagried named Pac-10 scholar
Greg Lagried of Edmonds, the starting catcher for the Washington State University baseball team, recently won the Pac-10 Conference's Baseball Scholar-Athlete Award.
Lagried, a senior, hit .332 this season and drove in 42 runs to help the Cougars reach the NCAA tournament for the first time in 19 years.
In order to be eligible for the award a student-athlete must be a senior who is on track to graduate, have at least a 3.0 grade-point average and play in at least 50 percent of his or her team's scheduled contests.
