Nuts and bolts: Camano Island home tour set for July 11

 Coming soon: The Camano Island Home Tour will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11 at five private homes with the following themes: "Everything Grand Scale," "Peaceful Oasis," "Quilter's Dream," "Ideal Beach House" and "Wow, Great Ideas."

Tickets will be for sale for $10 at Snow Goose Bookstore and Marcy's Boutique in Stanwood and Camano Island Coffee Roasters, Copy This-Mail That and Camano Lutheran Church Tea House, all on Camano Island.

Proceeds will benefit the Women's Republican Club scholarship fund.

Water weary: Are you tired of watering yet?

It's only June, a great time to set up a soaker hose system.

Before you get started, read these tips from Everett gardener Jessi Loerch, excerpted from Mudrakers, The Herald's gardening blog at www.heraldnet.com/mudraker.

  • Lay out the hose in the sun first. It'll soften it up some and make it easier to shape.

    Landscape-cloth anchors work great to hold a hose in place around bends, and they're easy to find.

    If you're laying out a complicated path, be sure to watch the hose closely the first time you turn on the water. You don't want the hose pulling free and messing up your plants.

    If you're smart and well-prepared, putting out the soaker hose before you even plant would be a great idea. You would just need to carefully plan your plant layout ahead of time.



    Art in the garden: The Pratt Fine Arts Center of Seattle will present "A Gallery in the Garden" art sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 18 through Aug. 2 at Swanson's Nursery, 9701 15th Ave. NW, Seattle.

    Featured items include hand-blown glass, forged ironwork and functional garden art by the many artists who create in Pratt's studios.

    Sale proceeds will support local artists and Pratt's classes and programs. Admission is free.

    An opening night celebration is planned from 6 to 9 p.m. July 17 before the sale opens to the public. Participants can view and purchase pieces while enjoying drinks and hors d'oeuvres. Tickets for opening night are $50.
