On June 21, an unhappy letter writer from Everett wrote about Mukilteo.
He describes Mukilteo as a "petulant child", who intends to "anger people," being "the city of 'Can't do that here'."
This word-picture invites the conclusion: Move the Clinton ferry to Everett.
I concur but for different reasons.
Let me paint an alternative word-picture.
We are not petulant. We are deeply concerned about accumulative development impacts on this special place.
We are not about angering people. We simply want to preserve Mukilteo's unique beauty and peace from further exploitation by special interests.
We are not "the city of 'Can't do that here'," we simply desire to direct change wisely.
This city cannot prosper or achieve its potential until a balance is restored between hyper-active commercialism and the geographic reality that tiny Mukilteo is locked in by Puget Sound and Paine Field. There is very little room. We might as well attempt to fit the USS Lincoln inside a thimble as proceed with current public policies and private sector plans that are doomed to failure.
This explains the discord surrounding such projects as relocation of the ferry terminal, development of the Tank Farm site, commercialization of Paine Field, presence of adequate parking for burgeoning WSDOT ferry commuters and preservation of Japanese Gulch green space from imminent industrialization on a monstrous scale.
Mukilteo's God-given beauty enhances us all. Sadly, It is being incrementally destroyed.
To stop this, let us indeed move the ferry to Everett. The June 21 letter writer has found the site -- formerly Nord Door manufacturing. As a growing urban center, Everett has room to accommodate the Clinton ferry and can make money from commuters as Mukilteo cannot.
