Police Officer Mike Braley (left) and Sgt. Bill Lange
Firefighters hadn’t arrived yet when Everett Police Sgt. Bill Lange and Officer Mike Braley responded to a house fire on Everett’s McDougall Avenue. It was almost 2 a.m. Nov. 24, 2011. They knew from a dispatcher that inside the house was a woman in a wheelchair.

She was in contact with the officers, but couldn’t unlock her door. With the smoke thick and flames visible, the disoriented woman moved farther into the house. A fire crew was on the way, but the officers used an ax to break the door. Risking their lives, they went in, coming out several times for quick breaths of air.

When at last they reached the woman, Braley carried her outside to safety. Smoke and flames were billowing from the house as firefighters and medical aid arrived. Both officers were treated for smoke inhalation. The woman, helped by neighbors after the fire, didn’t need medical care — thanks to two lifesaving police officers. Go to the next item.
