Lake Stevens lowers flags to honor fallen Marine

LAKE STEVENS - Flags were lowered to half-staff Wednesday at schools, businesses and government offices here in memory of Cody Calavan.

Calavan, 19, a U.S. Marine Corps machine gunner who graduated from Lake Stevens High School in 2003, was killed in an explosion in Iraq Saturday.

"He's the first soldier we've lost in Iraq from Lake Stevens, and we want his family to know that we love them and support them," said Dick Cowden of the Lake Stevens American Legion.

The city and the American Legion are working on plans to honor Calavan, Cowden said.

"Everyone wants to help out and show how proud we are of him and the other soldiers who are serving," he said.

Members of Operation Support Our Troops also have offered to help Calavan's family.

Calavan died in an explosion in Anbar province in Iraq, his family said. The U.S. Department of Defense would only say that Calavan, who'd left for Iraq in February, was killed in "hostile action."

Calavan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Calavan was the second serviceman from Snohomish County to be killed in Iraq. Justin W. Hebert of Silvana died Aug. 1 when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the Humvee he was in. He was 20.

Calavan, who'd joined the Marines in June 2003 after graduating from Lake Stevens High School, strongly supported the war in Iraq, his family said.

Under military rules, Calavan, whose younger brother died nine months ago, a victim of a drunken driver, could have turned down the Iraq assignment because he was the sole surviving son. But he chose to serve with his battalion.

A memorial service for Calavan had not been scheduled as of Wednesday.
