LAKE STEVENS - The American Legion and the city of Lake Stevens will honor Pfc. Cody Calavan in a ceremony at the city's war memorial Tuesday.
Calavan, 19, a U.S. Marine Corps machine gunner, was killed in an explosion in Iraq on May 29. He joined the Marines after graduating from Lake Stevens High School in 2003.
The city ceremony, at 1812 Main St., will follow Calavan's public memorial service. The memorial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Life Center Foursquare Church, 6830 Highland Drive in Everett.
Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served at the Lake Stevens community hall. Several residents and local businesses have donated food.
Calavan, who went to Iraq in February, was killed in hostile action in Anbar province in Iraq, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.
Calavan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Calavan was the second serviceman from Snohomish County to be killed in Iraq. Justin Hebert of Silvana died Aug. 1 when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the Humvee he was in. He was 20.
