Applause

Firefighters shave heads to honor pal

Fifty firefighters, friends and co-workers of Snohomish County Fire District 1 recently shaved their heads to show support for Capt. Don Navarre, who is losing his hair as he undergoes lymphoma treatment.

Dozens who weren't willing to part with their hair showed up at district headquarters to watch as Todd Bridges, owner of Bridges Barbershop in Bothell, and Shelby Nelson donated their time to help firefighters surprise Navarre with their haircuts.

Midway through the event, Navarre was called in from fire inspections. Firefighters Kyle Wiggins and John Jacobson, who organized the show of support, met Navarre at the door and led him into the apparatus bay, where he was greeted by a cheering crowd of bald and soon-to-be bald co-workers.

Students pack up supplies for others

Students in teacher Jim Stone's science classes at Lynnwood High School recently filled more than 80 backpacks with school supplies donated by students.

The backpacks were then taken to Seattle's Qwest Field Sept. 17 and donated to the "Backpacks for Hope" program sponsored by New Orleans Saints safety and Washington State University alumnus Steve Gleason and the WSU College of Education.

State coalition has new leaders

Four area residents have been elected to the state Law Enforcement/Firefighters Coalition.

Bob Monize, retired from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office and a Camano Island resident, has elected president.

Don Daniels, retired from the Seattle Police Department and an Edmonds resident, was elected secretary.

At-large board members are Don Kelsy, retired from the Seattle Police Department and a Snohomish resident, and Rich Greeshields, retired from the Everett Fire Department and a Marysville resident.

Fund's grants aid service agencies

The Human Services Endowment Fund made grants in August to assist human services agencies in Snohomish County in honor of former Snohomish County Executive Bob Drewel.

The fund, a permanent endowment that was started with $51,000 from a fundraising breakfast in 2003, plus a $100,000 gift from United Way, provides annual grants from the earnings.

The grants, the first the fund had made, were awarded to American Red Cross, Assistance League of Everett, Bridgeways, Snohomish County Center for Battered Women, and Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Fundraising family sent to conference

Kathleen Lefcourt's family was selected to attend the March of Dimes Volunteer Leadership Conference earlier this month. They were the top fundraising family team in the state for WalkAmerica. Their team, "Walk With Grace," raised more than $17,000.

State Patrol worker served 48 years

William "Bill" Dretke has retired as the State Patrol's most senior active-duty employee after 48 years of service.

In 1983, Dretke was assigned to the Everett District headquarters. He relocated in 1994, when the headquarters moved to a new facility near Marysville.

He retired as a communications supervisor Sept. 9 at the Marysville office.

Dretke and his wife, Barbara, have been married for 46 years.
