Woman injured in Everett fire
EVERETT - A grandmother suffered smoke inhalation Thursday night during an intense fire at an apartment complex.
The woman, who was not identified, was being treated late Thursday at Providence Everett Medical Center's Colby Campus. Her condition was not known.
The woman was the sole renter of an apartment at the Walden Pond complex in the 9900 block of 12th Avenue W. Fire investigators said the apartment apparently had no smoke detector.
The fire started in the living room area about 6:40 p.m. Firefighters arrived and had most of the fire out by about 6:50 p.m., Everett Fire Department officials said.
The woman was found inside and had to pulled out, fire officials said.
Although the fire was contained to the living room and only took 10 minutes to control, the heat registered at 400 degrees 3 or 4 feet from the ceiling, hot enough to melt plastic items in the room such as the thermostat, said Rick Robinson, assistant fire marshal.
"The fire was very hot and very smoky," Robinson said.
The intensity of the flames was fueled in part by half a mattress, which burned along with other contents valued at $10,000. The cause is under investigation, Robinson said.
