Good deeds

Meadowdale Beach Park in Snohomish County will benefit from a $10,000 grant recently awarded to Adopt-A-Stream by the Alderwood REI store. The grant money will help maintain the popular county park along Puget Sound. The $10,000 was a result of a record year at REI, with annual sales topping $1 billion in 2005, a first in the co-op's 67-year history. In recognition of this milestone, REI announced a special pledge to give back $1 million to community parks across the country. Meadowdale Beach Park was selected by employees of the Alderwood REI to be the store's community beneficiary. A portion of REI's profits is set aside each year for support of conservation, outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship causes, with $2.8 million to be awarded this year and more than $9 million since 1976, to such efforts around the country.
