Walsh-Platt athletic scholarships awarded
Maureen Frauenholtz of Everett High and Dirk Snel of Cascade received $5,000 awards.
EVERETT - Maureen Frauenholtz and Dirk Snel joined an elite club Wednesday night.
The well-rounded high school seniors were immortalized as winners of Walsh-Platt scholarships, joining an impressive group of previous winners that includes names like Terry Ennis, Chris Chandler, Grady Sizemore, Whitney Hooks and Travis Snider.
Frauenholtz of Everett High School and Snel (Cascade High) each won $5,000 awards at the 46th annual Walsh-Platt Athletic Scholarship Banquet. They were among 12 candidates whose all-around achievements were celebrated during a two-hour event at Cascade High School.
"Wow, I didn't really expect it," said Frauenholtz, a three-sport athlete who will play volleyball at Carroll College (Helena, Mont.). The past three years she has coached youths at the Everett Boys & Girls Club.
Snel, meanwhile, is also a multi-talented athlete who earned 11 varsity letters (four in basketball, three in football, three in golf and one in soccer). He was also surprised to win the top honor.
"This is great. I never expected something like this," said Snel, an Everett Community College basketball recruit. Snel praised the other candidates and thanked his family for always providing enthusiastic support.
Each year Walsh-Platt scholarships are awarded to one senior boy and one senior girl from an Everett School District high school (Cascade, Everett and Jackson). To be considered, student-athletes must earn at least two varsity letters in a sport, earn a varsity letter in at least one other sport, display exceptional school citizenship and participate in community service projects.
Other 2007 nominees were Liz Gross, Megan Morris and Ben Kendo of Cascade; Jessica Carey, Parker Burns and Axel Stanovsky of Everett; and Morgan Frost, Laice Valera, Jordan Lance, and Michael Manning of Jackson.
Dwayne Lane's Family of Auto Centers is the prime sponsor. It more than doubled the amount of scholarship money this year, increasing each award from $2,000 to $5,000.
Guest speaker Beau Baldwin, Central Washington University's head football coach, said he was humbled to stand beside such wonderful candidates. Baldwin challenged them to always take the high road and to remain well-rounded. No matter what they choose to do in life, nothing is as important as faith and family, he said.
The following awards were also presented during the ceremony.
* Coaches of the Year: Cascade - Daghan Kesim, boys soccer; Everett - Doug Hall, boys track and field; Jackson - Jeannie Thompson, girls basketball.
* Mom and Pop of the Year: Cascade - Tim and Debbie Rickman; Everett - Todd and Marcy Lund, and Ann Burns; Jackson - Jim and Rosy Addington.
