Fishing fleet book seeks your photos

EVERETT - The group looking for ways to honor Everett's commercial fishing fleet has decided to do a book. And it needs your help.

The group, called the Fisherman's Tribute Committee, is working with Arcadia Publishing, which produces a lot of books focused on community history, mostly in photographs.

That's where you come in. If you have family photos of Everett-based boats and commercial fishers, or know someone who does, committee members want to talk with you.

"We're looking for the family pictures that people have saved over the years," said Kay Zuanich, who is helping to organize the tribute.

Everett once had a very strong fishing fleet that began in the late 1800s. Since then, it has dwindled to just a few vessels. The group is hoping to preserve the history of the fleet and to honor its past and present members.

Zuanich, who comes from a fishing family, said the group is interested in local boats being built or operated and the people involved. But it also wants the background information.

"We need a story about the picture and who the people are," Zuanich said.

The photos will be electronically scanned by an intern from Everett Community College and returned to the owners. Then the images will be repaired electronically if necessary and readied for publication by Arcadia, a North Carolina publisher with a Seattle-area representative.

People with photos should contact either Katie Breke at 425-353-7836 or Cheryl Healey at 425-252-1470. The photos need to include a written description, the dates and locations where they were shot, identification of people in the photo and any other related information.

The pictures can be picked up by someone from the tribute group or they can be mailed and delivered to Fisher's Tribute, PMB No. 3804, 2525 Broadway, Everett, WA 98201-3020. Those with submissions should also include their contact information.

In addition to the book, the group is also planning a second fund-raising dinner sometime in October.
