Dumpster fire damages Lake Stevens High School

LAKE STEVENS — A Lake Stevens fire marshal is investigating the cause of a dumpster fire at Lake Stevens High School that spread to the roof of the building early this morning .

Initial reports suggested fireworks may have started the blaze but investigators found no evidence of fireworks being discharged in the area, said Dave Lingenfelter, deputy fire chief with Snohomish County Fire District 8.

Fire investigators are trying to determine if the blaze was the work of an arsonist.
"It was in the dumpster," Lingenfelter said. "We're certainly investigating it as a possibility."
The fire appears to have been contained to the outside of the building and is not believed to have caused damage inside the school, Lingenfelter said.

"It could have been significantly worse if it had got inside," he said. "There was a sprinkler head outside the dumpster that poured quite a bit of water on the fire until we arrived."

Firefighters were alerted to the fire just before 5 a.m. The dumpster, located on the north side of the school, was on fire and the flames had climbed to an overhang and roof, Lingenfelter said.

Firefighters fought the fire from the roof and ground with water and foam.
No injuries were reported.

It is unclear how much damage the fire caused. School is out for the summer.
