Arlington

Open house at visitor center


The newly located North County Visitor Information Center plans to host an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. today. The center now shares an office with the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce at Pilchuck Plaza, 3710 168th St. NE, Suite C101.

Volunteer travel counselors are needed to tell visitors about Snohomish County.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Edmonds

Annual carnival operated by kids


Families are invited to the annual City of Edmonds Day Camp Carnival scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St.

The carnival, which children help operate, is expected to feature games, prizes, cakes, raffles, balloon animals and more. Food is expected to be available for purchase.

All proceeds from the carnival are planned to help children from low-income families take part in summer camps, sports programs, arts activities and other events.

Everett

Cleanup vouchers for neighbors


Free vouchers good for taking up to 360 pounds of trash and yard waste to the dump are available to people who live in the Harborview-Seahurst-Glenhaven neighborhoods.

The neighborhood association's goal is to beautify the area by ridding yards of accumulated junk.

Coupons can be redeemed at the Airport Road Recycling and Transfer Station, 10700 Minuteman Drive.

Island County

New commander for Whidbey NAS


Navy Capt. Gerral David took over as commanding officer of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station on Friday.

He relieved Capt. Sydney Abernethy, who will retire in the Puget Sound area after 26 years of military service.

Under Abernethy, the naval air station won the 2006 award as the top Navy base, and was picked as the Northwest region's top base in 2007.

David is a 1984 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Island County

Workshops target rural land owners


A workshop titled Manage the Muck is scheduled for 6:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Camano Community Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive. On Thursdaya workshop titled Good Grazing is scheduled for the same times.

The WSU Cooperative Extension organized the workshops for rural land owners.

Lake Stevens

Night Out event coming on Aug. 7


The Lake Stevens Family Center and the Lake Stevens Police Department are planning the city's 24th annual National Night Out Against Crime event Aug. 7.

The block-party-style event is scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Lake Stevens.

Law enforcement agencies, community groups and businesses from the Lake Stevens area provide information about preventing crime and drug abuse. The event includes a free barbecue dinner, DJ, demonstration area, school supply collection, free prizes and street entertainment.

Marysville

TV21 presents city health info


Marysville cable access station TV21 this week plans to air a pre-recorded presentation of the Marysville Healthy Communities Project action plan.

The program is scheduled to air at noon, 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Wednesday through Monday, Aug. 1-6.

The plan is aimed at combating obesity and related chronic diseases. Marysville is the first city in the county to participate in the plan.

Mill Creek

Grant awarded to adult literacy tutor


A woman who works as a tutor and administrative assistant at Everett Community College has received a $1,000 grant from Friends of the Mill Creek Library.

The recipient, Judy Frost, is planning to graduate from Western Washington University's Human Services Program. She teaches literacy skills to adults through Everett Community College's Volunteer Literacy Program.

Friends of the Mill Creek Library gives out grants to support literacy education and services in the community.

Monroe

Group needs school supplies


The Sky Valley Food Bank continues to collect donations of school supplies to help students in the Monroe School District.

People can donate new backpacks and other school supplies or money to purchase the supplies at Sky Valley Food Bank, P.O. Box 724, Monroe, WA 98272. Checks must be designated as "School Days." Donations are needed before the last two weeks in August.

Mukilteo

Interim fire chief to stay on the job


Mike Springer has been named the new fire chief for the Mukilteo Fire Department.

Springer, who joined the department six years ago, has been serving as interim chief since February. Former Fire Chief Jack Colbath resigned earlier this year to take a job in Texas.

Springer was the assistant fire chief before he was appointed to the interim position.

Prior to starting in Mukilteo, Springer was a firefighter for 20 years in Edmonds. He's also worked as an adjunct fire science instructor.

Snohomish

People invited to summer festival


Everyone is invited to attend the 32nd annual Snohomish Chalet Summer Festival on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at 1705 Terrace Ave. The annual free festival features food, prizes, games and other activities.

Snohomish Chalet has about 120 residents with traumatic brain injuries. It holds the festival as a way to thank the community for its support.

Stanwood

Eagles host events to accompany fair


The Fraternal Order of Eagles Post 3041 plans to hold several events this weekend in conjunction with the Stanwood-Camano Community Fair. The post is planning a corn and lemonade booth at the fair. From 4 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, kids' karaoke and a spaghetti feed are planned.

The post plans to hold breakfast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at its headquarters, 6419 Pioneer Highway. Music and dancing are planned there from 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, there will be free pool and darts at the club all day. Everyone is welcome to attend.
