Cast can't cure muddled 'Georgia Rule'

Notable DVDs being released today include:

"Georgia Rule" (R): Almost universally panned when it played in theaters, this features a talented cast Jane Fonda, Felicity Huffman and Lindsay Lohan in a confused and poorly executed story about alcoholism and sexual abuse that, seriously, wants to be a comedy, too.

"Shakespeare Was a Big George Jones Fan: Cowboy Jack Clement's Home Movies" (Unrated): Nothing can put fear in your heart like the prospect of watching someone else's home movies, but most of the people you know weren't pals with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Bono and other cool music-biz types. Jack Clement was, and he took a lot of home movies. His varied life includes stints as a music producer and performer, an Arthur Murray dance instructor, a Marine and a slasher-film producer. He's credited with discovering Jerry Lee Lewis, Charley Pride and Townes Van Zandt. Footage includes Cash, Bono, Jennings, Pride, Elvis Presley, Kris Kristofferson and George Jones. Bonus features include a commentary by Clement.

"The Wind That Shakes the Barley" (Unrated): Cillian Murphy stars in this 2006 Palme d'Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Ken Loach, it's a tightly paced story of a young Irishman (Murphy) who abandons his dream of becoming a doctor to join the Irish Republican Army after witnessing his friend's death at the hands of British soldiers.

"Rush to War: Between Iraq and a Hard Place" (Unrated): Director Robert Taicher seeks the rationale behind the war in Iraq. Extras include an interview with Joe Wilson, husband of outed CIA employee Valerie Plame.

"Wind Chill" (R): This horror flick stars Emily Blunt and Ashton Holmes as a couple of college students who (you guessed it) get stranded while on a trip. Bad things proceed to happen, including the last half-hour of the movie.

TV on DVD

"Desperate Housewives: The Complete Third Season Dirty Laundry Edition": The soapy comedy bounces back somewhat from its lackluster second season. There's a mystery, a couple of weddings, a fake pregnancy, some deaths and witty repartee.

"30 Rock: Season One": Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey make this comedy work. The show was a bit wobbly at first but grew more confident and entertaining as the season went along.

"College football highlights": Football season is here, and you can get in the mood and relive some of your favorite team's glory moments with such titles as "Legends of the Fighting Irish," "Legends of LSU," "Legends of Auburn" (War Eagle!), "Legends of Ohio State," "Legends of Alabama" and also "Legends of ..." Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Oklahoma, Texas, the Cornhuskers, the Wolverines and West Virginia.

"Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars": For all you Holmes fans out there, Jonathan Pryce stars as the legendary detective in this BBC movie.
