Everett firefighters rescue house cat in apartment fire

EVERETT An accidental fire displaced one family and caused an estimated $50,000 in damage at a south Everett apartment building Sunday. Thanks to the quick response of a firefighter, the family cat survived.

Everett firefighters arrived at the three-story, six-unit apartment building in the 1100 block of W. Casino Road shortly after 1 p.m., where an accidental fire that apparently started on a deck spread up the siding to the attic, said Fire Marshal Glen Martinsen.

Crews doused the blaze with water and cut holes in the ceiling and roof to vent heat and smoke.

In the meantime, firefighters searched the building's six apartments for trapped people.

A cat was rescued from the unit that sustained the most damage. The pet was returned to its owners in good condition.

Firefighters responded to the fire four minutes after the call came in, said Roger Westlund, a battalion chief with the Everett Fire Department.

"It was just a nice coordinated interior attack," he said. "It was just aggressive firefighting."

Every year, his platoon saves a handful of pets from burning buildings, Westlund said. It's just part of the job.

There are no reports of injury to tenants or firefighters.

The Red Cross was asked to help the displaced family with temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
