Lakewood bounces back to beat G. Falls

MARYSVILLE — Even coaches can make mental mistakes.

Lakewood bounced back from what Cougar coach Dan Teeter called his “worst coaching decision ever” to defeat Granite Falls 28-20 in a Cascade Conference game played at Lakewood High School Friday night.

Granite Falls scored twice within the final minute of the first half. The second score came after Teeter had the Cougars attempt a fake punt on a fourth-and-2 in Cougar territory.

The Tigers stuffed the Cougars and went 30 yards downfield, scoring on a Jullian Gamache 12-yard touchdown run that cut the Cougars lead to 21-14.

“I was confident — other than the last drive. We were playing pretty good defense. I told them it was seven points on me,” Teeter said of his halftime talk.

Lakewood defender John Rundle recovered three Tiger fumbles and Joey Davenport and Jay Wettlaufer had 10 tackles apiece.

“I was really pleased with the defense,” Teeter said.

Not only was Wettlaufer a star on defense but the senior was a jack-of-all-trades on offense, playing four positions.

Wettlaufer finished with 13 carries for 47 yards. He also had a pass completion and caught four passes for 106 yards and touchdown.

Lakewood’s Ernest Mitchell added two touchdowns and 77 yards rushing and quarterback Justin Lane finished 12-for-22 with 190 yards and two TDs.

Gamache led the Tigers (1-3) with 164 yards and two TDs on 26 carries.

Lakewood (2-2) moved a game ahead of Granite Falls in the standings and into a tie with Sultan for the fourth and final Cascade Conference playoff berth.
