Boeing delays its 787 program by six months.

A matter of days before Airbus (finally) will deliver its much-delayed A380, rival Boeing has announced a major delay of its own.

Boeing's chief executive Jim McNerney went public with a six-month delay to the company's 787 Dreamliner program.

The announcement comes after a week of speculation, with Randy Tinseth, Boeing's marketing vice president, assuring reporters just this week that the 787 would be delivered on time in May 2008.

Later this morning, Boeing will hold a conference call, which will be Web cast, to provide more details.
