Reid family needs his sabbatical

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid always seemed like a good guy. He had great moments with the media. He played hardball with Terrell Owens.
That's why I'm sad now that his family problems are now national knowledge. His sons, Britt, 22 and Garrett, 24, are drug addicts. Both are going to prison. Britt was sentenced to eight to 23 months Thursday on a road-rage case. On the same day, Garrett was sent to prison for two to 23 months for a high-speed, heroin-related car crash.
The judge said both men had been overmedicated for much of their lives. Britt Reid said he had been prescribed as many as five drugs at a time by his doctors, including Valium, Prozac, Adderall and some anti-addiction meds. The judge ripped Andy and Tammy Reid for turning a blind eye to the drugs, firearms and ammunition that police found in their home and vehicles.
The judge called their home "a drug emporium" and the Reids "a family in crisis."
It's every parent's nightmare. This is magnified because of the media coverage.
Andy Reid took some time off last summer to tend to his family. He'd do well to repeat the move now, during the season.
I doubt he will, though. It's kind of a typical case of a workaholic coach who spends too much time on the job and not enough time with the family. That's not to excuse Andy Reid. He's made choices. Now, he has to live with them.
Something has to change. The hope is that Andy Reid recognizes that and takes time off for intensive family therapy, with the understanding with Eagles management that he will have the same job when he returns.
How important is the job? How important is Reid's family?
