James McCormack, 16, a Cascade High School junior, hopes to pursue a career as a firefighter, emergency medical technician or paramedic.

Lessons beyond school: Recently completed 24 hours of Community Emergency Response Team training through city of Everett's Office of Emergency Management, learning about search and rescue, triage and basic fire suppression.

More ahead: Also picked up a ham operator certification and in future classes will be learning about sandbagging, sanitation and weather patterns.

Career goal: To become a firefighter, an emergency medical technician or a paramedic.

Fond memory: Became interested in working for fire department as a little boy. Lived near a fire station in Silver Lake and would frequently stop by to visit and was always welcomed warmly. "I would go upstairs and hang out in the lounge with them. It was great."

Looking ahead: Plans to enroll in year-long fire service technology course at Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center as a high school senior and could enroll in firefighter training program at Everett Community College after that.

On the move: Born in Everett and also lived in California and Nevada when he was young. Attended four local elementary schools -- Liberty in Marysville and Jefferson, Silver Lake and Penny Creek in Everett -- as well as two middle schools, Gateway and Eisenhower in Everett. "It was a little hard moving around but it wasn't too bad."

Feeling settled: Likes living in Everett and is comfortable at Cascade High School. "I know everybody here. I'm just familiar with the area. It's a good place to be."

Favorite class: History.

Best part of high school: Friends.

Dream vacation: Germany. His uncle is in the Army and his family is stationed in Germany. Uncle is now serving in Iraq.

No thanks: Once thought about joining the Coast Guard after high school graduation, but decided against it. "I don't like the water that much."

Splat: Likes to play paintball. Has been on two teams and has traveled as far away as Fort Lewis to compete.
