Everett press release about campus recommendation

UW North perfect fit for Everett

Everett Station property identified as preferred location for new campus

EVERETT – Mayor Ray Stephanson was extremely pleased by the state consultant’s announcement today that the preferred location for the proposed UW North is the Everett Station area near the heart of downtown Everett.

“Today’s announcement is good news for future UW students, families and employers in Everett and the Puget Sound region,” Mayor Stephanson said, adding his many thanks for the tremendous support the community gave throughout the process. “This means families can consider higher education options closer to home while businesses will enjoy the influence and prestige that a UW presence brings to our community.”

The Everett Station area consists of more than 31 acres near the heart of downtown. The property includes the Everett Station, the city’s multi-model transportation center and is within close distance to Everett Community College and Providence Everett Medical Center. It is also located north of a 225-acre mixed-use project being proposed by developer Oliver McMillan.

“While there will be a considerable amount of work ahead of us, we are excited to welcome the UW to Everett,” Mayor Stephanson said, adding that he was pleased the rigorous process remained based on the facts of each site. “We believe that as this preferred location is considered by the Legislature, that Everett will prove to be the most economical and comprehensive site for a university.”

EVERETT STATION AREA AT A GLANCE:

Student Life: The Ultimate Urban Campus Location: Everett’s urban setting offers an extraordinary array of recreational, entertainment, cultural, housing, service and convenience opportunities for UW North students, faculty, and employees.

Proximity to business: The City offers the easiest access to nearby businesses and organizations that would offer the abundant “experiential learning” opportunities the University of Washington seeks. 50% of all experiential learning opportunities countywide are in the City of Everett.

Transportation and Transit: Everett’s location at the center of the region’s transportation infrastructure optimizes multi-modal accessibility to the city within the entire Snohomish, Island, and Skagit County area.
Highway improvements to I-5 are expected to be completed in February 2008 adding two lanes to the Everett interstate corridor.

Transit-Oriented Campus: A UW North campus at the Everett Station District will be optimally connected to the three-county area. Everett Station offers the best transportation and transit access to the greatest number of students in the three-county region serving Community Transit, Island Transit, Skagit Transit, Sound Transit and Everett Transit systems as well as Sounder.

Infrastructure: Water, sewer, transportation, and transit infrastructure already in place and readily available for expansion.

Urban Mobility In Everett: Within Everett is an extensive bus, bike, and trail network that, along with a potential future streetcar, offer UW North easy access to the city’s urban living amenities and allows for an automobile-free lifestyle.

Publicly Controlled Site Fits Near- and Mid-Term Requirements: Roughly 30 acres of contiguous land in the Everett Station District can be used to establish the UW North campus. University use and dormitory-style housing are permitted on the property, which is fully compliant with the GMA and the city’s Comprehensive Plan. Another nearly 40 privately held acres around the core are zoned for university development.

Public Ownership: The Everett Station District proposal is in public ownership with expansion potential.

Environmental Suitability: The Everett Station-area site features the smallest carbon footprint of any site and offers unique green building opportunities for the State of Washington.

Interim Site Ready for 2008: An interim site for the UW North could be located within the Everett Station District Campus at the Everett Station to accommodate students by the fall of 2008.

Development Experience: Everett is the one jurisdiction with a track record for delivering major projects - including Naval Station Everett, the Everett Events Center, Everett Station, cleanup of the Snohomish Riverfront, and a series of major transportation, Sound Transit, and freight projects.

Broad-based Public and Private Support: The Everett Station Campus location has been supported by both public and private entities that are excited about the projects of hosting the UW North in the City of Everett. The City of Everett has by far the largest base of business, labor, and environmental support for the new branch.

Fundraising: The community is poised to begin fundraising efforts for scholarships in support of a UW campus in Everett.
