Northwest briefly: State trooper shoots, kills man after attack along I-5

FEDERAL WAY -- A state trooper shot and killed a man who ran onto I-5 on Christmas Day and attacked an officer who tried to talk to him.

Patrol spokesman Cliff Pratt said the 27-year-old man jumped out of a car, started to take off his pants and exposed himself on an offramp about 2 p.m.

When troopers arrived at the scene, an officer tried to talk to the man, and he attacked the trooper. The officer used a Taser on the man, who responded by choking him. The 11-year veteran fired his gun and the man died at the scene.

Seattle: Police stop frat house rifle practice

A fraternity house is no place for target practice with a rifle, city police say.

A 21-year-old man was arrested after police were summoned to the four-story frat house north of the University of Washington by neighbors who were alarmed by gunshots from the basement, officer Jeffery R. Kappel said.

Officers surrounded the building and shouted for whomever was doing the shooting to drop the weapon and surrender. The man did so and police recovered a rifle, Kappel said.

No one was injured. Investigators determined that the man was shooting at cans and bottles he had lined up, and he was booked into the King County jail for investigation of reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm and property destruction.

Downtown bus tunnel to remain closed

Sound Transit officials say the computer problems that closed the downtown Seattle bus tunnel appear to be solved, but it remains closed for testing.

A spokeswoman for the regional transit agency, Linda Robson, said Tuesday that some circuit boards were replaced. Robson says officials believe the switch has fixed problems in the system that lets operators control signals, ventilation and other functions.

Still, the tunnel remains closed for testing until further notice, and she says it won't be reopened in time for the day-after-Christmas shopping rush Wednesday.

The tunnel was closed because of a computer failure on Dec. 17. It was reopened the next day but was closed again a day later and buses have been rerouted onto surface streets since then.

Lacey: Woman dead in mobile home fire

An elderly woman has died in a mobile home fire in Lacey.

Assistant Fire Chief Gary Pearson says the single-wide home was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived about 8:10 a.m. Monday. The woman's body was found about 9 a.m. after the fire was out.

Cause of the fire remains unknown, and Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock says he will not be able to identify the woman until Wednesday.

Oregon: Fireball lights up night sky

Could it have been Rudolph's nose, gleaming brightly? Or maybe just a meteorite in the making?

All across Central Oregon on Monday night, there were reports of a fireball seen streaking to the ground.

Keith Clinton, who lives east of Bend, reported that he saw a "large, bright green fireball descend out of the cloudless sky east of Bend."

Clinton said the fireball turned yellow and exploded about 10 degrees above the horizon, breaking into several pieces.

Meanwhile, someone near Prineville called the Crook County Sheriff's Office to report a meteorite that had come crashing to the ground.

Authorities checked with the Redmond Airport to see if any small planes had gone off the radar screens or had gone missing, but nothing of the sort was reported.
