Countywide food bank programs will benefit from a $4,000 donation by the Fire 1 Foundation, a nonprofit community service organization founded by the employees of Snohomish County Fire District 1.
This is the second major donation the Fire 1 Foundation has made to Volunteers of America this year. In August, the foundation contributed $4,000 to the program that supplies food banks throughout the county.
Fire 1 Foundation president Jim Grieco, a captain at Fire District 1’s Mariner Station, and treasurer Scott Schroeder, a battalion chief, presented the donation to the Volunteers of America Dec. 18.
“Supporting food bank programs is a tradition at Fire District 1 that started about 15 years ago when a group of firefighters passed the hat to collect money to sponsor a family for the holidays. It grew from there,” Grieco said.
Over the years, District 1 firefighters have raised more than $49,000 for the Volunteers of America food bank programs.
The donation to Volunteers of America is just one way District 1 employees are helping those in need this holiday season. Fire District 1 volunteer firefighters collected food and donations to provide gifts for a family of four. They were so successful in their food drive that they had enough donations to provide food to a family of 11 as well. The Fire 1 Foundation donated funds to purchase gifts for this family and three other families in Fire District 1’s service area.
“We’re grateful to the businesses and citizens that have supported our fundraising efforts and made it possible for firefighters to go above and beyond in meeting the needs of the citizens we serve,” Grieco said.
