Bail cut for suspect in shooting death
The bail for a college student accused of second-degree murder in an October shooting was reduced to $100,000 Thursday after his parents told a judge they would make sure he makes all court appearances.
Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Ronald Castleberry also required that Bryce Dawson Fortier, 23, be on electronic home monitoring.
That means Fortier would have to get court approval to be outside his Seattle home, except for medical emergencies and meeting with his attorney.
Everett defense attorney Pete Mazzone said Fortier's parents expect to make arrangements to post bail and get their son out of jail soon. Fortier had been a student at Central Washington University.
On Monday, Mazzone asked Castleberry to reduce bail from $500,000, which was set soon after Fortier's arrest Oct. 28 in the shooting death of Christopher Chandler, 17, of Kirkland.
Chandler was gunned down during a fight that included several young people outside a Halloween party in the Mill Creek area.
On Monday, Castleberry said he wasn't prepared to rule on the request to reduce bail and told the lawyers to return Thursday for additional arguments.
Before ruling, Castleberry questioned Fortier's parents, who assured the judge they would see to it that their son complies with conditions and appears for all court dates. Fortier's trial now is set for Feb. 8.
