Wet snow now, rain later today
By Jackson Holtz Herald Writer
Snow is forecast to taper off today and turn to rain showers in the lowlands of Snohomish County, weather experts said.
The afternoon commute will be wet and there’s a chance of some snow flurries overnight, said Dennis D’Amico, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle.
No further accumulation in the lowlands is expected, he said.
People in many parts of the county all the way to sea level saw a dusting of snow this morning.
Early-morning accumulation forced Everett schools to start late and cancel morning preschool and kindergarten classes.
The latest storm is dropping a lot of snow at Stevens Pass and other parts of the Cascades.
As much as two feet could accumulate overnight at the pass, D’Amico said. Traction tires are advised.
Changing weather conditions and additional heavy, wet snow is adding to an already unstable snow pack, causing extremely dangerous avalanche conditions in the mountains, said Kenny Kramer, an avalanche forecaster with the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center in Seattle.
Since December, three people from Snohomish County and nine people statewide have died in avalanches, making this year the deadliest in modern history, experts said.
On Friday, a 13-year-old Mukilteo girl died near Lake 22 off the Mountain Loop Highway. An Everett woman died snowmobiling New Year’s Day near Mount Baker and a Brier man died before Christmas while snowshoeing on Mount Rainier.
