M's invite their first-round pick to spring training

The Seattle Mariners will get their first good look at Philippe Aumont, their 2007 first-round draft pick, next month at spring training.

Aumont, a right-handed pitcher, is one of 18 players who will take part in the major league camp as non-roster invitees, the Mariners announced Thursday.

The Mariners took Aumont with the 11th overall pick in the June draft, enthused by both his size (6 feet, 7 inches and 225 pounds) and his fastball, which reaches 96 mph and has late movement.

Aumont, from Gatineau, Quebec, graduated from high school last year and spent much of the spring playing for Canada’s Junior National team. He signed with the Mariners late in the summer and didn’t play in the minor leagues.

Other non-roster players invited to spring training inlude left-handed pitchers Arthur Rhodes, Philip Barzilla, Robert Rohrbaugh and Jake Woods; right-handed pitchers Roy Corcoran, Brody Downs, Stephen Kahn, Kameron Mickolio, Chris Tillman and Chris Reitsma; catchers Jair Fernandez, Adam Moore and Brant Ust; and infielders Tug Hulett, Mark Kiger and Matt Tuiasosopo; and outfielder Bronson Sardinha.

Spring training begins Feb. 14 when pitchers and catchers conduct their first workout in Peoria, Ariz. Position players begin workouts Feb. 20.
