Mukilteo student on Carroll's dean's list

Emma Wegermann of Mukilteo was one of 401 students named to the 2007 fall semester dean's list at Carroll College in Helena, Mont.

Stanwood board member gets training

Roger Myers, a member of the Stanwood-Camano School Board, has completed a yearlong training program for school board members through the Washington State School Directors Association.

The training included five two-day sessions that included discussion on issues, sharing ideas, and presentations from state and national leaders in education.

Myers was one of 11 school board members from across the state to complete the program.

Steppe of Sultan earns master's degree

Melisa Steppe of Sultan received her master's of education from Indiana Wesleyan University on Dec. 15.

Elks Lodge names student of the month

The Everett Elks Lodge No. 479 student of the month for December is Michael Burow, a junior enrolled in the Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center welding program as well as a student at Kamiak High School.

Burrow will receive a certificate and a $50 U.S. Savings Bond from the Everett Elks.

Intermec awards grants to schools

Challenger Elementary School and the visual communications program at Kamiak High School have both been awarded $3,000 grants from Intermec Technologies.

Challenger will use its grant funds to buy two document cameras and projectors that will go into classrooms to help support student learning.

Kamiak's grant will be used to upgrade software or hardware in the visual communications classroom.

Mariner students aid babies of addicts

Lise Porter's human development class at Mariner High School raised over $1,300 last month for the Pediatric Interim Care Center in Kent.

The center helps babies recovering from drug addiction because their mothers used drugs during their pregnancy.

The students raised the money by selling "I Pick PICC" bracelets and helped promote awareness of their project by making presentations to health classes and by making posters.

Granite Falls draws a crowd for dedication

The dedication of the new $40 million Granite Falls High School drew more than 1,500 people, including students, five former superintendents and alumni from several decades.

"It was like a schoolwide reunion," said Kathy Grant, a school district spokeswoman.

The superintendents returning to Granite Falls included Jim Maw (1975-1983), Gary Wall (1995-2001), Paul Sjunnesen (2001-2002), Gale Hogan (1995-2001) and current superintendent Joel Thaut.

"The dedication was supposed to be from 1 to 3 and we had people there at noon and several people stayed until 4:30," Grant said. "It was a great day."

Mukilteo names seven award finalists

Seven employees have been nominated by their co-workers to receive the Mukilteo School District's Lighthouse Award for the first semester.

The Lighthouse Award is considered the highest honor that can be bestowed on a district employee.

The nominees are Ken Caldwell, a music teacher at Olympic View Middle School; Michael Clark, music director at Voyager Middle School; Neil Jaeger, world history teacher at Mariner High School; Peggy Mauge, an educational assistant at Voyager Middle School; Matt Palmer, an instructional technology specialist at the district office; Hal Reeder, coordinator of publications; and Audrey Sharp, visual communications teacher at Mariner High School.

The Lighthouse winner will be announced at Wednesday's school board meeting that was rescheduled from Monday because of snow. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the district office, 9401 Sharon Drive, Everett.

Pioneer PTSA makes several donations

Pioneer Elementary School PTSA in Arlington recently made several donations to improve the school.

The donations included $1,200 to buy microscopes; $2,000 for planting and walkway materials for the school's outdoor classroom in the library courtyard; $1,684 to buy library books and other resources; $1,000 to support the subscription cost of Accelerated Reader book quizzes; and $1,650 so each teacher will have $50 for classroom supplies, technology, staff development and supplemental curriculum.

Monroe qualifies 50 for state DECA meet

More than 50 Monroe High School marketing students recently qualified for the state DECA competition March 6-8 in Bellevue.

Monroe had five first-place award winners, along with eight second-place finishers.

Along with other top-five award winners, the remaining members placed high enough to earn state qualifying honors at the Area I DECA competition held at Monroe High School on Jan. 17.

There were almost 700 students from high schools in Snohomish, Skagit, Island and Whatcom counties competing in 22 different individual and team events. The events consist of a written test of comprehensive knowledge in marketing and a role-play of a situation common to a specific area of marketing and retailing. Advisers for Monroe DECA are Steve McKenzie, Deb Koenig and Darby Vigus.

Winners were Chris Furrer and Clint Miracle, business law and ethics management team; Keith Clark and Erik Monahan, financial analysis management team; and LeighAnne Barr, retail merchandising.

Finishing second were Tessa Degel, apparel and accessories marketing; Courtney McCabe and Krysta Rasmussen, buying and merchandising management team; Chris Bunge and James MacIntyre, financial analysis management team; Marissa Overcast and Annalisa Unbedacht, hospitality services management team; and Garrett Peckler, marketing management.

Other state qualifiers were John Mojica, accounting applications; Emily Roska, business service marketing; Kyle Berg, Justin Clark and Daniel Partridge, fashion merchandise promotion plan; Janelle Davis, food marketing; Sonam Ghag and Ericka Stanley, hospitality services management team; Kayla Oswald, technical sales event; Erin Moser, automotive services marketing; Jill Krisinger and Kim Nelson, business law and ethics management team; Tyler Claybrook, business service marketing; Jordan Guthmiller and Casey McNally, buying and merchandising management team; Lyndy Davis in entrepreneurship participating; Shaunna Champagne and Dara Smith, financial analysis management team; and Oneyda Chavez and Kayla Stafford, Internet marketing management team.

Other qualifiers were Alexa Walter, marketing management; Jesse VanHorn, accounting applications; Taylah Moore and Hannah Strumpfer, Internet marketing management team; Cory Sims, retail merchandising; Max Echterling, sports and entertainment marketing; Nicole House, advertising campaigns; James Hajek, automotive services marketing; Jordan Moses, sports and entertainment marketing; Nick Peterson, accounting applications; Alex Phengsavath, hotel and lodging marketing; Makaila Crinks, quick serve restaurant; Alison Carpenter, retail merchandising; Holly Huffman, accounting applications; Elizabeth Steere, apparel and accessories marketing; Michelle Latham and Vince Ruden, business law and ethics management team; and Matthew Bergquist, sports and entertainment marketing.
