Smoke was pouring out of the home by the time firefighters arrived about 4:25 p.m. in the 1000 block of 35th Street. Two people were inside when the fire started, but they were able to escape, Everett Fire Department assistant chief and fire marshal Glen Martinsen said. Investigators believe the fire started in the basement, then burned into the upper two floors of the old home. Extinguishing the fire was difficult because flames were burning inside the walls and the attic, Martinsen said. The blaze sent clouds of smoke into the air that left a haze over the neighborhood near downtown Everett. Damage estimates for the home were not available Saturday. The Snohomish County Red Cross was called to the scene to provide temporary housing and other assistance to the family of six that lived at the burned home. Firefighters rescued the family dog, which was on the property when the fire started. Family members sat on the sidewalk hugging the dog as firefighters continued to battle the house fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
