Nick Morrison loves tackling ball carriers but he hates wasting time.
That’s why he’s so excited about his future.
Morrison, a heavily honored football linebacker from Cascade High School, verbally committed this past weekend to accept a scholarship from Army. The 6-foot-3, 234-pounder decided during a recruiting visit to Army, which has a NCAA Division-I gridiron program.
“The school has a lot of history. It was just a real cool place — cool coaches and players,” said Morrison.
The school’s ultra-structured environment and emphasis on learning leadership skills are also huge positives, he said.
“I’m pretty much set for the future,” Morrison said.
A hard hitter known for his uncommon work ethic, quick decision-making and good speed for someone his size, Morrison had 112 tackles and six sacks during the 2007 season. The three-year starter also tallied 17 tackles for a loss and had four interceptions.
He earned several post-season honors, including The Herald’s All-Area Defensive Football Player of the Year award and Associated Press All-State first team recognition.
Morrison considered offers from Western Washington University and Central Washington University before picking Army.
Morrison said he plans to sign a binding NCAA National Letter of Intent within the next two weeks.
“We’re excited. It’s another area of commitment and it also speaks highly of (Morrison’s) work ethic,” Cascade football coach Jake Huizinga said.
Huizinga said Morrison will likely red-shirt his first year. The Cascade standout is projected to play either linebacker or defensive end for the Black Knights.
