Legislature honors Granite Falls teacher
OLYMPIA -- The Legislature paid tribute Wednesday to Granite Falls music instructor Andrea Peterson for her selection as the nation's top teacher in 2007.
Peterson, a music teacher at Monte Cristo Elementary School, received resolutions of commendation from both the Senate and House of Representatives.
Sen. Val Stevens, R-Arlington, sponsor of the Senate resolution, called Peterson an "amazing teacher" and "a true ambassador of the state."
In the House, Rep. Dan Kristiansen, R-Snohomish, spoke of Peterson's "incredible devotion" to her students.
Peterson is noted for melding instruction in music with teaching of concepts of other subjects such as math and science.
Rep. Dave Quall, D-Mount Vernon, noted there are 6.2 million teachers in the country.
"This is like the MVP. This is an unbelievable award," he said.
Peterson sat in the gallery of the Senate then the House as lawmakers passed their respective resolutions. After each vote, legislators stood and applauded her.
Peterson was joined by a small contingent that included her young daughter, her parents, Victor and Darlene Rahn of Centralia, and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson.
