Mariners spring training update
Today in camp
n Mariners vs. Cubs, 12:05 p.m. (PST) at Peoria on KOMO radio (1000 AM) and FSN Northwest TV. Left-hander Jarrod Washburn will make his second exhibition start for the Mariners, followed on the mound by right-hander Joe Woerman, left-hander Robert Rohrbaugh, right-hander Stephen Kahn and left-hander Cesar Jimenez.
Sunday in camp
n Seattle nicked NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy with four hits and two runs in two innings. And the Padres' right-hander took a line drive off the heel of his glove in the Mariners' 6-2 victory over San Diego in Peoria.
Peavy's so-so stat line wasn't as worrisome as the liner Mike Morse scorched off Peavy's glove in Seattle's two-run first inning. The ball caromed hard into Peavy, below the belt.
He never wears a cup.
"Yes, I would recommend it," said Padres manager Bud Black, a former major league pitcher.
Otherwise, Peavy was feeling good about his spring training debut.
"I felt really good, to be honest. And I didn't turn it loose by any means," Peavy said of his first start since he signed a $52 million, three-year extension last month.
The Padres would like their big investment to be well protected.
"Yeah, I know, I don't wear a cup. Guess I have to start wearing one," said the 26-year-old father of two young boys, ages 6 and 3. "But, hey, I'm done having kids.
"My teammates think I'm crazy, but I've got to be comfortable out there."

On the trainer's table
n Right-handed pitcher Anderson Garcia had a setback Sunday when he threw in the bullpen and he will be examined today by team physician Dr. Edward Khalfayan. Garcia has suffered from biceps tendinitis since the Mariners acquired him off waivers from the Phillies on Feb. 16.
Weather
n How's this for the perfect day? It'll be sunny with a high of 73, and Lou Piniella will be in the house with the Cubs.
They said it
n "If I'm playing anything with my brother and I lose, I get upset. Every time I cross the line, I play to win. It's my job."
Mariners starting pitcher Carlos Silva.
They did it
n Charlton Jimerson lost two of his bats during the live batting practice Sunday morning, then another Sunday afternoon in the ninth inning against the Padres. During batting practice, a pitch by Chris Reitsma shattered his first bat, then Mark Lowe had to leap out of the way when the barrel of Jimerson's bat pinwheeled past him. In the exhibition game, the barrel of Jimerson's broken bat pinwheeled into the stands, missing all spectators and crashing against a concrete stairway. There were splinters five steps up from where the bat hit.
