Legislature adjourns without Senate vote on Air Force tanker

OLYMPIA – The state Legislature adjourned Thursday without the Senate joining the House of Representatives in a collective denouncement of the Air Force decision on the $35 billion air tanker contract.

House members on March 7 overwhelmingly passed a measure urging Congress to block the Air Force from buying any aircraft from the venture of Northrop Grumman and the parent company of Airbus until an investigation is complete.

The measure extols the benefits to the national security and economy of granting the contract to Boeing.

Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, said Thursday night that it seemed unnecessary to act on the House measure because most senators had already signed onto a March 4 letter to Congress expressing disappointment in the Air Force decision.
