Boys track: 5 stars to watch this season
Joey Bywater
Lake Stevens
Key events: 1,600, 3,200 and 800 College plans: Signed with Washington Outlook: Coming back from a foot stress fracture that limited him during the fall cross-country season, Bywater is the defending Class 4A champion in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. The senior also won the 3,200 in 2006. It's difficult to predict what the season will be like for Bywater, Lake Stevens track coach Jeff Page said, because everything depends Bywater's health and how quickly the Husky recruit gets back into top shape.
Rendel Jones
Everett
Key events: triple jump and long jump College plans: Undecided Outlook: Already the school record-holder in the triple jump (46 feet, 9 inches), Jones is working hard to break Everett's long-jump record too, Seagulls track coach Doug Hall said. This past May at the 3A state meet Jones placed fourth in the triple jump, helping lead Everett to the team championship. In June the senior finished first in the same event at the seventh annual Washington vs. Oregon Meet of Champions.
Kyle King
Coupeville
Key events: 1,600 and 3,200 College plans: Signed with Eastern Washington Outlook: As if King needs more advantages over his opponents, he improved his footspeed over the past year, Coupeville track coach Eric Lindberg said. King, who competed for Oak Harbor during the cross-country season because Coupeville doesn't have a team, was the 2007 1A state track champion in both long-distance races. Great maturity and mental toughness make the senior unique, said Lindberg: "He is the best distance runner I've coached in 35 years."
Rodrick Rumble
Oak Harbor
Key events: High jump and shot put College plans: Undecided Outlook: A superb all-around athlete, Rumble earned All-Wesco North first team honors as a productive football receiver and as a high-scoring basketball wing. This spring, the senior will soar through the air as one of the state's elite high-jumpers. Last spring Rumble placed third in the 4A high jump finals with a personal-best effort of 6 feet, 6 inches. He is also Oak Harbor's best shot-putter.
Isaac Teichgrab
Stanwood
Key events: 400 and 200 College plans: Undecided Outlook: Ranked No. 1 among 4A returners in the 400-meter run, Teichgrab will try to win an honor that barely eluded him in 2007: The then-junior placed second in the 400 state finals, finishing just .02 seconds behind then-senior Ryan Barrett of Graham-Kapowsin. Teichgrab, an accomplished decathlete, is focused and ready, Stanwood track coach Paul Johnson said: "He has pretty lofty goals and he's working hard to achieve that."
