Three roster moves; no roster answers

Posted at 9:03 am by By Kirby Arnold

The Mariners made three cuts this morning, optioning outfielder Wladimir Balentien and catcher Rob Johnson to Class AAA Tacoma and re-assigning lef-thanded pitcher Jake Woods to the minor league camp.

None of the moves is a surprise, except may to the few people who thought Balentien had a chance to make the team. The Mariners have said all along that the best place for him is at Tacoma where he can get regular at-bats instead of a season on their bench, where his development would suffer becauase of the inactivity.

"He needs to play every day," manager John McLaren said. "We didn't want him sitting around."

Other notes from the clubhouse this morning:

- Pitcher Brandon Morrow said his shoulder felt good the morning after he pitched an inning in a minor league game Sunday. He will pitch another minor league game Tuesday afternoon.

- McLaren said it would be difficult to finalize the roster before the final three exhibitons in San Francisco on Thursday and Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday. There are too many issues with the bullpen to make any decisions before the team leaves Arizona.

- McLaren said the organization hasn't discussed any waiver-wire pickups. However, scouts arrived today and the organization will discuss such options.

- First baseman Richie Sexson, who had a cortisone shot in his right shoulder, was feeling better today and was in today's lineup against the White Soix. He's been dealing with bursitis.

- Knuckleball pitcher R.A. Dickey will start Thursday night's game at San Francisco. "I"m eager to see him in the heavy air and see how it affects his knuckleball," McLaren said. That outing will help the M's decide for sure if Dickey, a Rule 5 draft pick, will make the team.

- Felix Hernandez will pitch the Thursday afternoon game in Peoria against the Padres.

- Willie Bloomquist, who missed a week because of a right quad injury, will get at-bats in the minor league camp Tuesday and Wednesday.
