Celebrate job corps on Whidbey Island

From 1933 to 1942, the Civilian Conservation Corps gave jobs to about 3 million men who planted billions of trees, built parks, fought fires, built roads and bridges, and offered disaster relief.

Their work and the Corps' 75th anniversary will be honored at 1 p.m. Saturday at Deception Pass State Park on Whidbey Island, nine miles north of Oak Harbor.

Exhibits open at 10 a.m. and there will be food at 11:45 a.m. The Voyager Middle School Jazz Band from the Mukilteo School District plays between 1 and 3 p.m.

Anti-smoking teens plan Lynnwood rally

Students plan to gather at 11 a.m. today for Kick Butts Day.

Teens Against Tobacco Use clubs from three high schools plan to rally at the intersection of 196th Street SW and 44th Avenue W. in Lynnwood.

Teens from Lynn­wood, Meadowdale and Mountlake Terrace high schools will show their support for choosing not to smoke or for quitting tobacco.

Assistance League sets open house

Assistance League of Everett plans an open house to mark service to more than 50,000 students in the county through Operation School Bell during the past 43 years.

Operation School Bell is Assistance League of Everett's oldest and largest philanthropic program. This year, 3,300 kids got school clothes.

The open house is 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the thrift store, 5107 Evergreen Way, in Everett. Also planned is a 6 p.m. program in the Gretchen DeLap Room.

Talk solar tech on Camano Island

Learn about solar technology for homes at a free lecture, "Making Sense of Solar," at 7 tonight at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive.

The presentation includes an overview of solar technology, solar system designs, green job opportunities in the state and the economics of solar power.

The lecture is planned by Washington State University Island County Beach Watchers. The group presents a lecture on the fourth Wednesday of every month.
