Former custody officer accused of pocketing $25,000 in fees

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – A former Mountlake Terrace Police Department custody officer was arrested Wednesday for investigation of 10 counts of misappropriation of public funds, a felony, according to a Washington State Patrol affidavit.

During a year-long investigation, state patrol detectives determined the man, 36, of Marysville, allegedly pocketed nearly $25,000, said Robert Calkins, a state patrol spokesman.

He was in charge of supervising the city’s electronic home monitoring program, according to court documents. That job included collecting fees from people on the program and keeping track of the time served.

Detectives allege that the man pocketed some of that money, the documents said. He also allegedly falsified documents and failed to properly monitor most of the people he was assigned.

The man worked for Mountlake Terrace for two years. He was placed on administrative leave in February 2007 when supervisors became aware of the alleged misconduct.

He had previously worked as an Everett Police reserve officer and a corrections officer in King County.

No one answered the phone at the man’s home on Thursday.
