Team effort carries Jackson to victory

EVERETT -- A solid team effort can make a coach forget how cold he is.

Eleven different members of the Jackson boys track team won events on Thursday, helping the Timberwolves earn a cold victory in a Wesco South meet at Everett Memorial Stadium.

"It started with a little hail," Jackson boys coach Eric Hruschka said of the conditions for Thursday's meet. "Had a lot of cold wind in the middle and it finished with just cold."

The Timberwolves won 13 ­of the 17 events, including two relays and 11 individual competitions, en route to 109 points. Lynnwood was second with 50 points and Meadowdale third with 8.

"We won 11 events, all with different winners, that's pretty rare," Hruschka said. "We had a lot of young kids win for the first time ... which is great for the future of our program."

In his first time competing in the 800-meter run, Derek Woolsey finished with a time of 2 minutes, 7 seconds to lead a Jackson sweep of the top four places. The Timberwolves also swept the top four spots in the 1,600 and 3,200.

"We swept all the distances races," Hruschka said. "(Woolsey) is in his first year of track and he wins the 800 in his first time running it."

Jackson sophomore Timothy St. Marie set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 42 feet. Hruschka said St. Marie "had a great day ... he's really close to our (school) sophomore record, which is held by Johnie Kirton, who plays for UW now."

Shorecrest 70.5, Kamiak 54.5, Edmonds-Woodway 53: At Shoreline, Marek Domanski's discus throw was 5 inches off the Shorecrest school record. He also took first in the shot put, pacing the way for Shorecrest to earn the team victory.

Oak Harbor 65, Arlington 59, Snohomish 57: At Snohomish, Richard Chong won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and ran on the winning 1,600 relay team to help lift Oak Harbor to the Wesco North victory. Bryan Mack won the long and triple jump events to pace Arlington to second place, and Snohomish's Marlyn Anderson won the shot put and discus.

South Whidbey 77, Sultan 44.5, Coupeville 37.5: At Langley, Hisashi Sanda, Scott Stallman and Andy Bennett each won multiple events to help lift South Whidbey to the Cascade Conference victory. Sanda won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and ran on the winning 400 relay team, Stallman won the 400 and 800 and Bennett won the 110 and 300 hurdles. Sultan's John Grossi won the long and triple jumps to help the Turks finish second overall. Tyler King won the 1,600 and 3,200 to pace Coupeville.
