Throwing rocks at Windows

Posted at 2:39 pm by Eric Fetters

Apple's much-admired operating system is the center of way too many blogs, online discussions and other blather on the Internet. In its latest incarnations, Apple's OS has been relatively fast, efficient and simple without being facile.

Windows, on the other hand, is often treated like the government: a necessary system in order to get stuff done on the majority of the world's computers. It rarely inspires passionate defenses.

But, suddenly, there's a fervent Windows campaign going on, and the big operating system is in the news again. Unfortunately for Microsoft, no one's going ga-ga over Vista, the much-maligned newest version of Windows.

Instead, many are trying to save Windows XP. Infoworld and others are wringing hands over Microsoft's decision to stop selling XP at the end of June, although it will keep supporting the system for another three years or so. There's even an online petition to save XP.

Meanwhile, analysts with Gartner are all but declaring Vista already dead and looking forward to Windows 7, which is due sometime in the next year to 18 months.

As someone who recently went from an Apple at home to a PC running Windows XP, I was pleasantly surprised to find XP wasn't as obtuse as I had feared. And it's been really stable. I have to admit, however, that I'm scared to make the switch to Vista after all the horror stories I've heard.

I would love to hear other people's experiences with Vista, especially if you're also familiar with XP. Which one really is better?

Vista is that bad at all.
I've heard the horror stories too of Vista, and im using it now. I've had it for 1 month and I still like it. As a graphic designer, I even wnat my desktop to look good, so I don't mind the minor preformance hit (Which isn't even noticeable) but I can understand people still like thier older hardware/software. One thing I hate at time is this window that pops up asking to to verify every thing you do... annoying.

... bloop! Would you like to run this software? DO YOU trust it? DO YOU?!!!! Are you sure?!

Also from a gamer stand point I can understand XP hands down, but I like Vista and im sticking with it. It's only a matter of time till they optimize everything and make it a much more stable enviroment.
