How other hospitals are growing

Here's a look at building projects at other area hospitals:

Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington: Work will begin on the hospital's $45 million construction project in June. Plans call for a new 40,000-square-foot, two-story building. The emergency room, which will be on the building's first floor, will have 16 treatment areas. Other services on the first floor include: patient admitting, blood testing stations and a gift shop. Food services, a cafe, respiratory therapy, oncology, a pharmacy, the hospital laboratory and a chapel will be on the second floor. The new building is expected to open in September 2009.

Harborview Medical Center in Seattle: The hospital's nine-story, $164 million addition is scheduled to open in June. With 244,380 square feet of space, the building will include eight operating rooms, inpatient beds, clinical space for medical specialties and added space for diagnostic procedures.

Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle: The hospital now has 250 beds, 31 of which are for pediatric intensive care patients and 14 for the intensive care unit for infants. The hospital is planning a major expansion over a 15- to 20-year period that calls for construction of a 600-bed hospital. It's the biggest expansion since the hospital opened a 170-bed hospital in 1952 in the Sand Point neighborhood. Seven alternatives are being considered so the final cost of the project is still undetermined.

Swedish Medical Center in Seattle: The new $130 million Swedish Orthopedic Institute is scheduled to open on its First Hill Campus in June. The 372,000-square-foot building will initially include 56 beds with space for 28 to be added in the future, 10 orthopedic operating rooms, an outpatient pharmacy, conference rooms and a cafe.
